Wisdom teeth often present many different kinds of problems for our St. Petersburg, FL patients. The position of these teeth leads them to become one of the most common culprits working against the health of your mouth.
Fixing a wisdom tooth issue usually involves removing it. In most cases, preserving the health of the first and second molars (closer to the front of your mouth) is more important than the wisdom tooth. In most cases a wisdom tooth is either hiding in you gums un-erupted, or partially exposed and rubbing other teeth, your check or tongue.
To remove wisdom teeth at our dental office, we follow our modern dental procedures to help extract the tooth safely and as painlessly as possible.
We start with taking digital x-rays of your teeth and reviewing the images on computer monitors with you. Next, we start our pain management tactics to help you through the extraction procedure with little to no pain. Almost all of our St. Petersburg, FL patients are surprised as how little pain they felt going through the procedure. The entire visit usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour.
You’ll probably want to have someone drive you home after your appointment. The following couple days are usually spent relaxing and weaning off the pain management medication.
“It’s really a great feeling when following up with our patients to hear that they are glad their pain is gone,” says Maher Rashid, DMD at Dolphin Dental, serving the St. Petersburg area. “They always feel a sense of accomplishment when they end months of pain with one appointment and a couple days of taking it easy.”
Wisdom teeth problems usually come in two main forms: wisdom teeth that endanger other teeth, and wisdom teeth that cause their own problems.
When wisdom teeth endanger other teeth, they are usually pushing against other teeth. The wisdom tooth may be in the gums, partially erupted, and fully erupted. The touching of teeth can move teeth in a bad way and cause pain. By touching and pushing other teeth it can endanger them of cracking or getting cavities and degrading.
When wisdom teeth cause their own problems, again, they may be in the gums, partially erupted or fully erupted. It’s not uncommon to see a wisdom teeth positioned very poorly in any of these cases. This means it may be cause irritation in your gums and swelling. Wisdom teeth may be rubbing against your cheek or tongue causing sores. Teeth that stay in the gums are called “impacted” and can develop their own infections and painful situations.
