What are they and how do they work?
With St. Petersburg, FL having a strong retirement population, our dentist office gets its fair share of questions about dental bridges. The following are a few of the most-often-asked ones:
What is a bridge?
As teeth deteriorate with age, sometimes one or two need to be removed and replaced with a dental bridge. A dental bridge helps to fill in the gap caused by missing teeth. The bridge usually consists of two crowns that are placed on the teeth on either side of a gap. The crowns serve as anchors for the “fake” teeth that will take the place of the gap. So, you wind up with the fake teeth being secured by the two teeth on either side of the gap. A dental bridge is permanently fastened or cemented to the supporting teeth and cannot be removed by the patient.
What is a dental bridge made from?
Your dentist can bring some options to the table as you both create a dental game plan for your teeth. Dental bridges are sometimes made from porcelain, gold, plastic or alloys. In some cases, a combination of some of those materials is the best approach. Your dentist can address which approach is best for your situation.
How long does it take to get a bridge?
Having a bridge put in place usually takes two visits to your local dentist office in St. Petersburg, FL. The first visit is used to prepare the anchor (or “abutment”) teeth. They have crowns placed on them. Next, a mold is created of the teeth to be used in constructing the bridge piece. Most times you leave this first appointment with a temporary bridge. The second visit is used to place the bridge. It is not uncommon to have a return visit to make some final adjustments if you are experiencing any discomfort.
Is a bridge uncomfortable?
Nope. A bridge is designed to let you chew and talk normally again without the annoyances created by having a gap in your teeth. Dental Bridges look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
