The term “endodontics” comes from the Greek words “inside” and “tooth.” Technically speaking, it is the study and treatment of dental pulp, and it can be used to treat cracked or infected teeth. But most people know this kind of treatment as a “root canal.” It is imperative that these kinds of procedures are done by a licensed, trained and experienced Seminole dentist, as the dental pulp is made up of sensitive nerves, blood vessels, and tissues. That is why, when a tooth is cracked or has a deep cavity that has been left untreated, patients often experience throbbing pain and swelling in their jaw. You want to make sure this area is treated using the industry’s latest methods and technology.
When you have a broken tooth, or even a cavity, the dental pulp becomes exposed to harmful bacteria that often cause infection. When you visit Dolphin Dental of Seminole for an endodontic treatment, we will first remove the infected areas and use stable material to fill it. Depending on the severity of your situation, proper treatment may require 2-3 visits to our office.
Endodontic Treatments & Root Canal Procedures
You should never wait or delay your endodontic treatment. Although root canals have a negative stigma attached to them, often making people weary and fearsome of having one done, we assure you that all of our treatments are gentle and safe. We always make sure the comfort of our patients is our number one priority. We offer anesthesia for most of our root canal therapies.
- During the procedure we will use what is called a “rubber dam” to isolate the infected area, and use tiny, specialized tools to access the pulp chamber from the top of your tooth.
- Once we clean, disinfect and fill the area, we will replace the area with a crown.
- We will also take a multitude of x-rays both before and during the procedure to ensure proper positioning and the most efficient removal of infected pulp tissue possible.
When your tooth is infected, it will never heal on its own. It will only become more painful and dangerous with time. Although it is an option to have the tooth extracted, you will still eventually require additional treatment to have the source of the infection removed.
